2010 Newsletter

The past year HOC has been very busy with long standing members leaving and starting new HOC projects.

This year our long term treasurer and Community Garden leader Gerald Rutherford left us to relocate down in sunnier places and our Town liaison, Linda Blasetti, retired in December. But as old members left their positions new members came forward and filled these jobs.

  • Wendy Milam to fill the role of treasurer
  • Chris Mills to be the community garden leader (who did a outstanding job in filling Gerald Rutherford’s shoes)
  • Debbie Posey to fill Linda Blasetti’s role as Town liaison in November 2010.
  • Florence Christophers to fill the role of secretary

Welcome all to HOC and thank you for filling these key roles!

HOC had several projects this year with the following members representing us.

  • Foothills Country Hospice – Allan Herchek
  • Books for Babies – Jan Hurkett, Bonnie Chant-Kinsman South Health Campus – Audrey Rezanoff
  • Sheep River Trust – David Lynn
  • Community Garden – Chris Mills

Also a thank you to Lise Brisebois-Blouin and Debbie Layne MacLeod who represent Alberta Health and their various projects that we do with them.

This year we started a new project with Dr. Morris Gibson in developing a natural green area for their school yard which is in the theme of a healthier environment.

HOC were also a part of the Okotoks Social Wellness Framework process which produced a report that will help in creating a better community for Okotoks. Both Bonnie Chant-Kinsman and Al Hagan represented HOC and did an excellent job.

This fall we also had the opportunity to meet with other groups to discuss issues surrounding healthy lifestyle living. I hope that projects in which we can all work together will develop from this workshop.

Our GO2 group is still very active especially with youth, the Mayor’s walk, and other projects. I hope this continues into the future. The message still needs to be sent out that an active lifestyle creates a healthier life.

Our website is being reconstructed so HOC members and the public can access information more quickly.

As we look towards the future I also look to the past. Members should remember all the projects that we have completed and that we will continue to do to make Okotoks a healthier place.
