Shannon Kleibrink

Okotoks is proud to have 2006 Olympic Bronze Medalist (Curling), Shannon Kleibrink as a GO2 Champion.

Shannon, an active mother of two, works part-time and plays approximately 150 curling games per season. To keep in shape, she works out at Dexter’s Gym three times a week and uses an Elliptical Trainer every morning. Shannon also manages to fit in weekly TRX classes held at the Recreation Centre as she knows the importance of being physically active

As a child, Shannon’s father encouraged her to try at least one new activity a year and at age 13 her new activity was curling. She is happy she followed that advice as it led her all the way to the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy!

Shannon is now passing the same advice onto her children, and encourages other parents to do so as well.

It’s important for kids to be active. If parents see physical activity as a priority, their children will also view being active as a priority and make it part of their everyday lives. It becomes normal, just something they do, like going to school. It becomes important to them and they learn to make time for the activities they like to do. It helps them to concentrate when they need to concentrate and develop skills that are important to being well rounded individuals.

Shannon and her family have lived in Okotoks for two years and because most of Shannon’s training can be done in Okotoks, she has more time to participate in other activities and to support her children in their endeavors. They are involved in hockey, fastball and of course, curling. The entire Kleibrink family is a member of the Okotoks Curling Club and play regularly in the mixed curling league.

Shannon believes in the importance of being physically active and because it is a priority in her life, it is something that she automatically makes time for.

It becomes part of what you do. You make time for it, because you love it. All the health benefits are a bonus as well!
